Armour & Co. Building
Armour & Co. Building, National Register of Historic Places office building in San Francisco, US.
The Armour & Co. Building is a three-story brick structure on Battery Street with arched windows and detailed cornices characteristic of early 20th-century industrial design. Its solid construction showcases the robust building methods of that era, with thick masonry walls and carefully proportioned openings.
Built in 1907, this structure rose from the ruins of an earlier warehouse destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fires that devastated the city. It represents San Francisco's reconstruction and the economic revival that followed that catastrophic event.
The building exemplifies the industrial growth of San Francisco, serving as a meat processing facility with four smoke ovens on each floor.
The building can be viewed from the street where its brick work and window details are clearly visible from the sidewalk. It is located in an active commercial district with good pedestrian access and street-level visibility from Battery Street.
The structure underwent major seismic reinforcement in the 1970s to meet updated building safety codes. These modifications allowed the historic building to remain in use while meeting the demands of modern office operations.
