One Maritime Plaza, Steel skyscraper in Maritime Plaza, San Francisco, US
One Maritime Plaza is a 27-story skyscraper constructed with diagonal steel bracing and a facade of bronze-anodized aluminum and tinted glass. The building extends across a large footprint and includes restaurants and banking facilities on its ground level.
The building was completed in 1967 by the renowned architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and was originally known as the Alcoa Building. It arose as part of a larger development project in this area of the city.
The plaza surrounding the tower displays sculptures by renowned artists that remain on permanent view. This collection transforms the outdoor space into a place where architecture and art meet.
The building connects to nearby complexes through elevated pedestrian walkways, making it easy to explore surrounding areas. Access to shops and restaurants at lower levels makes it convenient to spend time and eat in the vicinity.
The building's interior structure uses an unusual system where steel columns are spaced far apart and loads are carried primarily through tension rather than compression. This design allows the interior to be used and reconfigured flexibly.
