The building opened in 1988 from architect John C. Portman Jr.'s design, becoming part of the Financial District's transformation during that development era. A major renovation by KHP Capital Partners beginning in 2021 updated interior spaces and brought in new dining concepts.

The building links to Embarcadero Center via a pedestrian bridge, forming part of the network of pathways that connect Financial District locations. The design encourages people to move through the area on foot rather than relying on cars.

The hotel is easily accessible by public transit and located near major waterfront attractions. Its proximity to Embarcadero provides direct access to shops, dining, and bay views without needing a car.

New restaurants from Omakase Restaurant Group and interior spaces redesigned by AvroKO feature cobblestone patterns and terrazzo accents in the renovated areas. These design choices blend contemporary touches with details that reference the building's location in the historic Financial District.
