Embarcadero Center is a commercial complex of four office towers, two hotels, and a shopping center on a 9.8-acre site in San Francisco's financial district, bounded by Clay, Sacramento, Battery streets and the Embarcadero. The towers have grid-like facades of dark glass and concrete with many small square windows; at night the lit base stands low along the water.
Construction of this development began in the 1970s and transformed the waterfront area into a major commercial center. The project became a landmark of modern urban development in San Francisco.
The central plaza serves as a gathering place where locals and visitors encounter public art displays and seasonal celebrations. These shared spaces bring life to the business district throughout the year.
The complex occupies a 9.8-acre site bounded by Clay, Sacramento, Battery and the Embarcadero, with Embarcadero Station on Market Street just south of it. Two extension buildings, Embarcadero West, stand west of Battery Street. The low lit base along the waterfront holds the shopping levels, and the towers rise directly behind it.
During winter months, a section of the plaza transforms into an outdoor ice skating rink, creating a surprising recreational space in the downtown area. This seasonal change brings a festive mood to the business district.
