San Anselmo

San Anselmo is an incorporated town in Marin County situated in valleys at the foot of Mount Tamalpais. San Anselmo Creek runs through the center while oak-covered hills form a protective ring around the residential and commercial areas.

The North Pacific Coast Railroad built a line through the area in 1875, transforming pastoral farmland into a transportation hub. This rail connection attracted settlers and established the town as a regional center for commerce and daily travel.

The name comes from Saint Anselm, and the town has become a gathering place for artists and filmmakers over the decades. Today you can see this creative spirit reflected in local galleries, studios, and public art installations throughout the town center.

The town center has multiple parking lots with free spaces, especially on holidays, making it easy to explore shops and restaurants. The flat areas around the main street are walkable, while the surrounding hills offer hiking trails of varying difficulty for those wanting to venture farther out.

A cast iron deer statue named Sugarfoot stands permanently at the intersection of Center Boulevard and San Anselmo Avenue. This quirky landmark has become a familiar meeting point and conversation starter for both residents and visitors to the town.
