Marin County Civic Center, Government building in San Rafael, United States
The Marin County Civic Center is a government complex in San Rafael featuring long flat lines, arches, and a blue roof that stretches across several connected sections. The structure combines offices, a library, and courtrooms beneath a continuous roofline with repeating architectural elements.
Frank Lloyd Wright designed this complex as his final project and completed the plans shortly before his death in 1959. Construction began in 1960 and finished over the following years, bringing his vision to life posthumously.
The name comes from the county whose local administration works here throughout the day. Visitors often see staff moving through offices and experience a working government center in action.
The complex sits along Civic Center Drive and is accessible during business hours when the administration is open. Visitors can walk through public areas and explore interior spaces as well as the surrounding grounds.
Two science fiction films used the building as a backdrop for futuristic government scenes, including the debut of a well-known director. The architecture appeared so advanced that it worked without additional props or alterations.
