Prayerbook Cross, Stone monument in Golden Gate Park, United States.
The Prayerbook Cross is a stone monument in Golden Gate Park that rises about 57 feet high. It was constructed from sandstone, marble, and granite on a hillside overlooking Rainbow Falls.
The monument was donated by the Church of England for the 1894 Midwinter International Exposition in the park. It commemorates early Anglican services that took place on the Pacific coast during the colonial period.
The cross displays Celtic architecture and carries inscriptions marking early Anglican worship on the Pacific coast. Visitors can observe how the site commemorates this religious tradition through its physical design and placement.
The cross can be reached by walking paths from John F. Kennedy Drive, located east of Cross Over Drive in the park. The route involves some uphill walking, so comfortable shoes are recommended.
The structure is assembled from 68 individual stone pieces that together weigh about 600,000 pounds. Each of the four arms was constructed from eight separate pieces to achieve this massive scale.
