Japan Center, Architectural complex in Japantown, San Francisco, United States
The Japan Center extends across three connected buildings housing retail spaces, restaurants, and entertainment venues along Post and Geary Streets.
The center opened in 1968 as part of an urban redevelopment project that transformed the neighborhood and displaced 8,000 local residents.
Books Kinokuniya anchors the retail space, offering Japanese literature, magazines, and media products to the local community.
The complex includes multiple parking levels, direct street access from Fillmore Street, and connects to the Peace Plaza public space.
Architect Minoru Yamasaki incorporated concrete Brutalist elements with Japanese design features throughout the three-building structure.
