Tor House and Hawk Tower
Tor House and Hawk Tower, Historic residence in Carmel-by-the-Sea, United States
Tor House is a stone residence in Carmel-by-the-Sea with a main dwelling and a 40-foot granite tower built from boulders collected along the local shoreline. The tower contains a winding staircase reaching an observation point where visitors can see Carmel Bay and the surrounding coastline.
Robinson Jeffers and his wife Una constructed the estate between 1918 and 1925, teaching themselves the craft of stone masonry in the process. The property became a notable literary hub during the 20th century before eventually becoming a protected historical site.
The house drew in writers and artists who sought out Jeffers during his lifetime, making it a gathering place for creative minds. Visitors can still sense the intellectual energy that filled these rooms when acclaimed figures came to spend time here.
Guided tours operate on Saturdays with groups limited to six people, so advance reservation is necessary to secure a spot. It is best to book ahead since tour slots fill up quickly.
Robinson Jeffers incorporated recycled materials and stones gathered from local beaches into the towers, including salvaged stonework from demolished buildings. This resourceful approach and handcrafted quality remain visible throughout the structure today.
