17-Mile Drive, Scenic coastal route in Monterey County, United States.
The 17-Mile Drive is a coastal road on the Monterey Peninsula in California, running between Pacific Grove and Pebble Beach. The route passes through private residential areas and follows the Pacific coastline with several marked viewpoints.
The road began in the early 1900s as a carriage path for guests traveling between the Hotel Del Monte and the Lodge at Pebble Beach. It later became a motorway and remained a private toll route.
Professional golfers and celebrities frequent the route to access the prestigious Pebble Beach Golf Links, which hosts major tournaments throughout the year.
Five entrance gates provide access, and visitors receive a map showing marked stopping points along the route at entry. The drive takes about an hour without extended stops.
Sea lions, harbor seals, and sea otters can be seen along the coast, especially at Point Joe, where they rest on the rocks. Cypress trees along the road grow in unusual shapes due to salty winds.
