Pebble Beach Road Races, Historic motorsport competition in Pebble Beach, California, United States
Pebble Beach Road Races were motorsport competitions held on 2.1-mile-long streets in a residential area next to the Lodge at Pebble Beach. The route wound through tight turns and cypress-lined streets that visitors can still drive today.
The races took place between 1950 and 1956, drawing numerous drivers until a fatal accident in 1956 ended the competition. This incident led to the closure of the course and shifted racing events to other locations in California.
The races established California's presence in motorsport history and led to the creation of the Laguna Seca Raceway as its successor.
Visitors can drive through most sections of the former race course today by purchasing an entrance ticket at the Pebble Beach gate. The roads form part of normal access to the resort and are observable while driving through.
The original 1950 course mixed paved two-lane roads with gravel and dirt sections, starting near what is now the Pebble Beach Equestrian Center. This varied surface posed extra challenges for drivers compared to a standard circuit.
