Little Saigon, Vietnamese neighborhood in East San Jose, United States
Little Saigon is a Vietnamese neighborhood in East San Jose that stretches from the Junipero Serra Freeway to Owsley Avenue. Story Road serves as the main commercial street, lined with Grand Century Mall, Vietnam Town, and more than 250 privately owned businesses offering Vietnamese food, goods, and services.
The neighborhood grew as Vietnamese immigrants settled in the area during the late 1900s. In 2007, the San Jose City Council officially recognized the district as Little Saigon following community protests and public demonstrations.
The neighborhood comes alive during Tet celebrations, when lion dancers and traditional rituals fill the streets and draw thousands of Vietnamese American residents. These events show how the community keeps its heritage part of everyday life here.
The area is easy to explore on foot, with clear street sections and plenty of restaurants, shops, and markets to visit. Best times to visit are during regular business hours when most stores are open and the neighborhood feels most active.
San Jose holds the largest Vietnamese population outside Vietnam, with Vietnamese Americans making up roughly one in ten residents of the city. This concentration has made the district a vital refuge for Vietnamese culture and traditions.
