Shoreline Park, Recreational park and wetlands in Mountain View, United States.
Shoreline Park is a recreational area and wetlands reserve in Mountain View with grasslands, marshes, and a central lake. The grounds feature multiple walking trails and spots for watching wildlife.
Mountain View bought the site in 1967 to build a recreation area, but raising it 20 feet to prevent flooding was too costly, so it operated as a landfill taking San Francisco garbage. Shoreline Park opened in 1983 and initially faced methane fires. In 1987 it won the League of California Cities' Helen Putnam Award for public works.
The Rengstorff House, a Victorian mansion moved here from elsewhere in Mountain View, stands in the built-up part of the park. Shoreline Amphitheatre sits beside the golf course, and the boathouse on the lake's eastern shore runs sailing, windsurfing and kayaking classes. The Helen Putnam Award for public works came in 1987.
Paved and unpaved trails run through the park, some forming part of the San Francisco Bay Trail; they link to the Stevens Creek Trail at the eastern edge and the Palo Alto Baylands on the western edge. Boats, windsurfing gear and kayaks are rented at the Shoreline Boathouse on the lake's eastern shore. The wildlife refuge at the bay edge is reached by passing through the developed park.
The meadowlands near Permanente Creek hold remnant habitat for the western burrowing owl, listed as a Species of Special Concern by the California Department of Fish and Game in 1979. Only 35 remained in Santa Clara County when the source was written, with three breeding pairs raising ten eggs at Shoreline in 2011.
