Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial, Military memorial in Contra Costa County, United States.
The memorial features exhibits and interpretive displays documenting the largest wartime disaster on American soil during World War II.
On July 17, 1944, an ammunition explosion at Port Chicago Naval Magazine killed 320 servicemen and injured hundreds more in San Francisco Bay.
The memorial honors the African American sailors who comprised most of the casualties and highlights the racial segregation within the military during World War II.
Visitors need to schedule guided tours 2 weeks in advance through the National Park Service to access this restricted military installation.
The explosion created a crater 66 feet deep, damaged buildings within a 27-mile radius, and registered 3.4 on the Richter scale.
