McHenry Mansion, Renaissance Revival mansion in Modesto, United States
McHenry Mansion is a three-story house in the Renaissance Revival style located in Modesto, California. The exterior features ornate stonework and tall windows, while the interior retains original wood floors, marble fireplaces, and hand-carved woodwork throughout.
The house was built in 1883 by Robert McHenry, a banker and rancher who was one of the most prosperous figures in the San Joaquin Valley at the time. It was later listed on the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of its architectural and historical value.
The house shows how wealthy families lived and moved through their rooms in the 1800s. You can see which spaces were meant for entertaining guests and which were private.
The mansion is open only through guided tours, so it is worth checking the schedule before planning your visit. A visitor center on site can help with orientation and provide more context about the house and its rooms.
Many of the furnishings inside the house are original pieces that belonged to the McHenry family, not reproductions brought in for display. This makes it one of the few places in the region where you can see an authentic 19th-century interior largely intact.
