Fernbridge, Concrete arch bridge in Humboldt County, US
Fernbridge is a concrete arch bridge crossing the Eel River in Humboldt County, linking California State Route 211 to the city of Ferndale. Its structure features seven concrete arches supporting both vehicles and bicycles.
Engineer John B. Leonard designed and built this reinforced concrete bridge in 1911 as a lasting crossing over the river. The project was one of the first applications of this modern construction method in the region.
The structure earned recognition as a California Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1976 and received a place on the National Register of Historic Places.
The bridge is open to both vehicles and cyclists for daily passage. It is best crossed during daylight hours, and visitors should be aware of the agricultural activity in the surrounding area.
The selection of reinforced concrete for this bridge was informed by lessons from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Engineers observed how this material withstood seismic forces and chose it to ensure durability.
