Folsom Lake State Recreation Area, State recreation area near Sacramento, United States
Folsom Lake State Recreation Area is a large reservoir near Sacramento with more than 75 miles of shoreline bordered by oak forests and grasslands. The lake is surrounded by hiking and biking trails that wind through the landscape around the water.
The Folsom Dam was constructed beginning in the 1930s to provide water supply and prevent flooding in the region. This project created the lake and permanently altered the course of the American River.
Native American tribes maintained settlements in this region before European colonization, establishing hunting and gathering practices along the American River banks.
The area has several entry points for boating and designated swimming zones along the shoreline. Camping at the facilities requires seasonal permits, so advance planning is helpful.
The lake becomes a critical lifeline during California dry periods when regional water levels drop significantly. Year-round it supports diverse activities from fishing to mountain biking on trails that crisscross the land.
