The state designated Pine Hill as an ecological reserve in 1979 after environmental groups advocated for protecting natural areas from development.
The reserve protects eight rare plant species, including four endemic types that grow exclusively in the special gabbro soil conditions.
Access to the reserve requires advance arrangements through the Department of Fish and Game regional office for educational or research purposes.
The western section of El Dorado County, where the reserve sits, contains nearly 10 percent of California's native plant species.
