Port Orford, Coastal settlement in southern Oregon, United States.
Port Orford is a coastal city in southern Oregon where mountains meet the ocean. The working harbor operates daily with fishing boats lifted in and out of the water using cranes positioned on the dock.
The settlement was founded in 1851 by Captain William Tichenor and developed into a fishing port. Fort Orford, a military structure from that era, operated until 1856 before being abandoned.
Local artists maintain galleries throughout the downtown area showcasing works in wood, metal, and glass. These studios reflect the craftsmanship tradition that shapes everyday life in town.
The harbor is easily visible from land with several viewpoints to watch daily fishing operations. Walking paths and visitor information are available at the center on Jefferson Street.
About 30 fishing boats are launched and retrieved daily using cranes, a practice rarely seen elsewhere in the world. This distinctive harbor method is necessary because of the coastal conditions at this location.
