Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park
Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, Nature reserve in Del Norte County, United States.
Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park is a nature reserve in Del Norte County, northern California, known for its large stand of ancient coast redwoods. The trees grow along a river that winds through the grounds, connecting flat riverside areas with deeper forest sections.
Authorities established the area as a protected forest zone in 1929. The name honors a fur trapper who crossed this region in the 1820s as one of the first Europeans.
The park takes its name from an early explorer and sits along a river that has served as a landmark for centuries. Visitors today follow the same natural routes through the coastal mountains that were used long ago.
Hiking trails lead through different parts of the reserve, some staying near the riverbanks while others climb into higher areas. The paths are generally well maintained but can become slippery after rain.
In the Stout Grove, the trees stand farther apart than in other parts of the park. This arrangement came from particular soil conditions that favored the growth of each individual tree.
