Fern Ridge Wildlife Area

Fern Ridge Wildlife Area is a protected site west of Eugene featuring lakes, marshes, and open fields across multiple terrain types. The land and water areas support a range of habitats where visitors can encounter diverse wildlife throughout the site.

The site was established in 1957 through cooperation between the US Army Corps of Engineers and the Oregon Game Commission. This partnership created the protected area to manage and preserve wildlife resources in the region.

The site attracts bird watchers and nature photographers who come to observe and document hundreds of bird species. People visiting the area engage in these activities to experience the natural world on display here.

Designated parking areas allow visitors to access the site by foot to explore different sections at their own pace. Early morning and late afternoon visits offer the best chances to observe wildlife as animals are most active during these times.

The southeastern section contains deliberately flooded fields that attract ducks, geese, and swans during colder months. These managed areas play a critical role in supporting migratory bird species that rely on the site as a stopping point.
