Tolovana Beach State Recreation Site, State recreation area in Cannon Beach, United States
Tolovana Beach State Recreation Site stretches along the northern Oregon coast with wide sandy beaches that offer direct access to the Pacific Ocean. The shoreline exposes rock formations and shallow pools at low tide, while the area attracts surfers and beachgoers throughout the year.
The site was purchased from private owners between 1967 and 1969 and developed into a state recreation area. North of the location stands the family vacation home of Governor Oswald West, representing key aspects of regional development in the mid-20th century.
The name Tolovana comes from an Alaskan Native American language and means 'river of sticks'. The Warren family chose this name when they mapped out the streets in the surrounding area.
The site is open during daylight hours from sunrise to sunset, with parking and facilities including a playground and restrooms on the grounds. The best time to visit is at low tide when tide pools and rock formations are accessible, as the area experiences strong winds and waves at other times.
The area lies just under a mile from Haystack Rock, a 70-meter tall rock formation that can be explored at low tide. This isolated outcrop serves as a nesting and resting site for seabirds, giving visitors the chance to spot puffins and other ocean birds.
