Indian Beach

Indian Beach is a public shoreline along the Pacific coast featuring sandy expanses interrupted by dark rock outcroppings. The intertidal zone contains pools where sea stars, anemones, and other marine life cluster among the rocks.

The coastline was documented by William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1805 when the party spent winter at Fort Clatsop. Their observations helped map the Pacific Northwest and record details about this remote Oregon shore.

The name refers to Native Tillamook inhabitants who lived along this coast for centuries before European contact. Today the beach draws visitors who explore the same rocky shores and tide pools that sustained these communities through food gathering and trade.

Access comes through Ecola State Park, which offers parking and marked trails leading down to the shore. Low tide reveals more of the tide pools and makes walking between rocky sections safer and easier.

Low tide creates temporary passages and hidden coves that connect normally separated sections of the shore. Visitors often discover small caves and larger caverns within the rock formations that exist only when water recedes.
