Youngs River Falls, Cascade waterfall near Astoria, Oregon.
Youngs River Falls is a waterfall near Astoria, Oregon, where the water drops roughly 55 feet (17 meters) in a wide cascade formation. The falling water collects in a deep pool surrounded by thick forest on all sides.
The river was discovered in 1792 by Lieutenant William Broughton of the Vancouver Expedition and named after Admiral Sir George Young of the Royal Navy. This early exploration documented the area for the first time in European records.
The waterfall has served as a filming location for popular movies over the years, bringing attention to this remote spot in the forest. This role in cinema has made it known beyond the local area.
A marked parking area provides access to a short walking trail that leads to the base of the waterfall. Good viewing spots are available from different points along the path.
The pool at the base of the waterfall is notably deeper than many other falls in the region, reaching several meters down. This depth makes it hydrographically distinct and sets it apart from shallower pools elsewhere.
