Saddle Mountain State Natural Area

Saddle Mountain is a forested peak in northern Oregon featuring wildflower meadows and rocky passages on its upper slopes. The mountain contains diverse habitats that change with elevation, supporting different plants and animals as you climb.

The area gained protection in 1916 when the State Land Board acquired land from the federal government to preserve this natural region. This reflected early efforts to safeguard Oregon's landscape from development.

The Clatsop Native American tribe recognized this mountain as a significant geographical feature long before European settlers arrived in the region.

The trail is well marked with reinforced metal mesh sections to prevent erosion and improve grip. Come prepared with sturdy hiking boots and plenty of water, as the path climbs steadily throughout.

From the top you can see both where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean and the Cascade Mountains spanning the Oregon-Washington border. This rare view combines two of the region's grandest geographical features in a single vista.
