Old Scotch Church
Old Scotch Church, Presbyterian church in Hillsboro, United States.
The Old Scotch Church is a house of worship in Hillsboro with an eight-sided steeple and stained glass windows brought from Scotland. The Carpenter Gothic style shows in the wooden details and decorative elements that give the building its particular form and character.
Construction finished in 1878 on land donated by Jacob Hoover, making this one of Oregon's oldest active places of worship. The congregation grew from Scottish immigrants who brought their church tradition from Aberdeenshire to this region.
The name recalls the Scottish settlers who established this congregation, and that heritage shows in the building's design and fixtures. You can see how immigrants carried their traditions across the ocean into their new community.
The building is easy to reach and the cemetery grounds are open during daylight hours for visitors to explore. It helps to check ahead whether a service or event is taking place when you plan your visit.
The cemetery holds a memorial cairn for ancestors who lived through the 1692 Glen Coe massacre in Scotland. This remembrance connects the present site to a tragic event in the old homeland.
