Main Street Bridge, Railway bridge in Hillsboro, United States.
Main Street Bridge is a railway bridge in Washington County designed to carry light rail traffic across an active corridor. Its distinctive concrete arch dominates the center of the structure, supported by a system of cables that allow for a clear span without obstruction.
The structure was built in 1997 and replaced a wooden trestle from 1917 that was removed after freight service ended in 1977. This new design reflected the need for a modern crossing suitable for contemporary light rail operations.
The installation of the final track components in October 1997 included a ceremonial golden spike, marking the completion of the Westside light rail line.
The crossing is fully accessible for transit riders and serves as part of the regular rail network. Visitors can best experience the bridge during operational hours when trains run according to schedule.
The design intentionally avoids central support columns to create a completely clear span across the corridor. This engineering choice was driven by safety concerns related to accidents that had occurred with previous crossing structures at the same location.
