Orenco Woods Nature Park, Nature park in Hillsboro, Oregon, US
Orenco Woods Nature Park is a nature park in Hillsboro, Oregon, made up of wetlands, forest areas, and open meadows. Trails run through these different zones, letting visitors move from one habitat to another on foot.
The land once belonged to the Oregon Nursery Company, which grew fruit trees on the site, including a variety called the Orenco apple. When the nursery stopped operating, the land was eventually turned into a public nature park.
Two sculptures in the park refer to the Orenco apple and the farming past of the land. They give visitors a concrete sense of how fruit growing once shaped this neighborhood's identity.
The park is open from sunrise to sunset, with an entrance on Birch Street and parking nearby. Some trail sections can get muddy after rain, so sturdy footwear is a good idea before heading out.
The Rock Creek Trail passes over a bridge where great blue herons and beavers are often spotted in the wetlands below. Early morning and late afternoon are when these animals tend to be most active and easiest to see.
