Facing the Crowd, Public sculpture at Providence Park in Portland, US
Facing the Crowd is an art installation of two large bronze faces positioned at the Providence Park stadium entrances. One depicts a laughing man and the other a smiling boy, both serving as striking welcoming elements at the venue.
The installation was created in 2001 during a major renovation of the stadium. The project was part of a program that set aside a percentage of construction funds for public artworks.
The faces represent different stages of human life and reflect on the location's changes over time. Visitors can see this as a statement about growth and how places evolve with their communities.
The sculptures are located at the intersections of 18th and 20th Avenues with Morrison Street and are easily visible from street level. You can approach them from multiple directions since each face is positioned at a separate stadium entrance.
Each face was designed separately by artist Michael Stutz to create different viewing experiences depending on which stadium direction you approach from. The laughing and smiling expressions contrast with the typical seriousness found in stadium artworks.
