Zion Lutheran Church
Zion Lutheran Church, Lutheran church in downtown Portland, United States.
Zion Lutheran Church is a church building in downtown Portland, Oregon, designed with modern lines and clean aesthetics. The interior features extensive use of wood throughout and large windows that allow natural light to fill the worship spaces.
Pietro Belluschi designed this church in 1950 as part of the Northwest Regional architectural movement, using local materials and construction methods. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996 for its outstanding representation of mid-20th century church design.
The sanctuary doors display copper low-relief angels crafted by sculptor Frederic Littman, blending spiritual imagery with local artistic traditions. These sculptures show how craft and faith come together in the building's design.
The building is located in downtown Portland on SW 18th Avenue and is easily accessible on foot. Regular services and community events are held throughout the week, so checking ahead for specific times will help you plan your visit.
This building was an early place where regional architectural principles met modern design in a thoughtful way. The combination of local materials with clean contemporary lines makes it a rare example of how tradition and innovation worked together during its era.
