East Portland Branch, Public Library of Multnomah County
East Portland Branch, Public Library of Multnomah County, Public library in central eastside Portland, United States
The East Portland Branch features red brick architecture with terra-cotta details and a green Spanish tile roof at 1110 Southeast Alder Street.
Constructed in 1911 with Carnegie Foundation funding, the library functioned as a public service center until 1967 before becoming an office building.
The facility contained separate reading rooms for adults and children, with ceiling heights reaching 18 feet to create open reading spaces.
The library served thousands of residents throughout Multnomah County, increasing registered borrowers from 1,000 to 8,000 within months of opening.
Architect A.E. Doyle designed both a temporary structure and the permanent building to meet immediate neighborhood demands for library services.
