Fort Lewis, Military base in Tacoma, US
Fort Lewis is a military base in Pierce County, US, covering roughly 35,000 hectares of open grassland. The installation includes training grounds, several runways, and housing areas for soldiers and their families.
The base opened in 1917 as Camp Lewis through a joint effort by local businessmen and military planners to train troops for World War I. It later became a permanent garrison and served as a hub for Army operations in every conflict since.
The installation maintains extensive military traditions through ceremonies and training programs while supporting over 45,000 service members and their families.
The installation sits directly beside Interstate 5 and connects within short distances to the ports of Tacoma and Seattle. Visitors need an invitation or authorized reason to pass through security checkpoints.
The base operates more than one hundred firing ranges for different weapon types and training scenarios scattered across the terrain. It is also the only major Army power projection base west of the Rocky Mountains.
