Celilo Converter Station, HVDC converter station in Wasco County, United States.
The Celilo Converter Station operates at the northern end of the Pacific DC Intertie, transforming alternating current to direct current for long-distance power transmission.
Built in 1970, the station initially utilized mercury arc valves for power conversion until 2004 when they were replaced with modern light-triggered thyristor groups.
The station represents the technological advancement of the Pacific Northwest region through its role in managing hydroelectric power from federal dams.
The facility maintains transmission capacity of 3,800 megawatts at ±560 kilovolts, connecting power grids between the Pacific Northwest and Southern California.
Adjacent to the main facility stood an abandoned high voltage testing station, originally planned for a connection to Hoover Dam that never materialized.
