Flattery Rocks National Wildlife Refuge

Flattery Rocks National Wildlife Refuge, Marine wildlife sanctuary on Washington's Olympic Coast, United States.

Flattery Rocks National Wildlife Refuge is a protected marine area along Washington's Olympic Coast comprising hundreds of offshore rocks, reefs, and islands scattered across the Pacific. This rugged landscape stretches from Cape Flattery to Copalis Head, creating a complex system of rocky outcrops and open water.

The refuge received protection in 1907 through a presidential declaration, making it one of the earliest marine reserves in the country. This early recognition set the standard for protecting marine habitats along the Pacific Coast.

The refuge forms part of the Washington Islands National Wildlife Refuges, preserving 430 acres of vital habitats for North American seabirds.

You can view and explore the rocks and water from the shore and nearby areas, but landing on any island or rock is not permitted. Maintaining distance helps protect nesting birds and their vulnerable breeding sites.

Black oystercatchers build nests directly at the water's edge using pebbles, while tufted puffins dig burrows into soft cliff slopes. These two bird species demonstrate completely different nesting strategies within the same habitat.
