The refuge encompasses over 800 offshore rocks, reefs, and islands stretching along the Pacific coastline from Cape Flattery to Copalis Head.
The land gained protected status in 1907 through President Theodore Roosevelt's declaration, making it one of the earliest wildlife refuges in the United States.
The refuge forms part of the Washington Islands National Wildlife Refuges, preserving 430 acres of vital habitats for North American seabirds.
Access to the islands remains restricted, with a mandatory 200-yard buffer zone around each land mass to protect nesting seabirds.
Black oystercatchers construct their nests at the water's edge using pebbles, while tufted puffins dig burrows into the cliff's loamy surfaces.
