SMONEĆTEN Campground, National park campground in North Saanich, Canada.
SMONEĆTEN Campground is a 49-site campground set among forest in the vicinity of Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal in British Columbia. The grounds feature picnic tables, fire pits, pit toilets, and multiple water sources throughout.
The land began as McDonald Provincial Park before shifting to Parks Canada management as Gulf Islands National Park Reserve in 1948. This transition brought new stewardship and long-term conservation focus to the site.
Four cedar poles and interpretive signs throughout the grounds share W̱SÁNEĆ language and traditions, revealing how Indigenous peoples connected to this land. Visitors encounter these cultural markers while exploring the campground.
The campground operates from mid-May through late September with forest-based amenities for campers. It is advisable to reserve ahead as proximity to the ferry terminal makes it a sought-after spot.
The name SMONEĆTEN comes from W̱SÁNEĆ language and refers to where Indigenous peoples historically gathered Douglas Fir resin for wound healing, fire starting, and canoe repair. This practical knowledge reflects deep ties between people and the forest.
