Spieden Island, Private island in San Juan County, United States.
Spieden Island is a 516-acre private landmass in the San Juan Islands with forested slopes on the north side and grassy areas on the south. The highest point reaches approximately 374 feet (114 meters) above sea level.
The island was named during an American naval expedition that explored the region between 1838 and 1842. It honors William Spieden, who served as purser aboard the expedition vessel Peacock.
The island served as a private hunting ground for decades before shifting toward environmental education. Visitors today can observe the introduced European and Asian wildlife that inhabits the slopes.
The island remains private property and can only be viewed from boats on the water. Visitors should bring appropriate gear for boating and plan for changeable weather conditions typical of the region.
The island hosts populations of introduced animals from Europe and Asia, including Mouflon sheep and various deer species that have become established there. These non-native species thrive on the slopes and have shaped the island's character.
