Kitsilano Beach, Public beach in Vancouver, Canada
Kitsilano Beach is a sandy shoreline along English Bay that overlooks downtown Vancouver's skyline and the North Shore Mountains across the water. The beach stretches for a considerable distance with varied sections for different activities and viewing angles.
The area was originally called Greer's Beach after Sam Greer, who claimed waterfront land in 1882 before the Canadian Pacific Railway took control. This early period shaped how the shore was developed and used in the years that followed.
The Squamish people called this place Xwupxpayʼem, meaning 'having red cedar' in their language. Today visitors gather here for informal activities along the shoreline and grassy areas.
The area has volleyball courts, a saltwater pool, playgrounds, and picnic areas spread throughout the beach. These facilities are easy to spot and accessible during daylight hours.
The beach is home to Canada's longest outdoor swimming pool filled with filtered and heated saltwater from the Pacific Ocean. This pool offers year-round swimming opportunities separate from the bay's natural conditions.
