Climate Pledge Arena, Indoor sports arena in Seattle Center, United States
Climate Pledge Arena is a multi-purpose venue at Seattle Center with seating for 17,000 people during professional sports matches and entertainment shows. The roof consists of a suspended concrete canopy that hangs above the interior while the seats rise in tiers around the central event floor.
The building was designed by Paul Thiry and opened as the Washington State Pavilion during the 1962 World's Fair in Seattle. Decades later it underwent extensive renovation and reopened in 2021 under its current name as a modern sports venue.
The Seattle Kraken play their hockey games here while the Seattle Storm host their basketball matches, each drawing thousands of fans throughout their seasons. On game nights the building fills with supporters wearing team colors who cheer, chant and experience the atmosphere of a North American sporting event.
Several parking garages nearby offer space for nearly 3,000 vehicles and free transit passes help visitors reach the venue on event nights. The building is accessible by ramps and elevators and security checks at the entrance require some extra time before events begin.
The ice surface for hockey games is made from collected rainwater and about three quarters of the food comes from producers in the region. These measures aim to reduce the environmental footprint of the facility and connect sports entertainment with sustainability goals.
