West Queen Anne School, Schule in den Vereinigten Staaten
West Queen Anne School is an elementary school building constructed around 1896 in the Queen Anne neighborhood of Seattle. Designed in Romanesque style with rounded arches and sturdy stonework, it now functions as a residential condominium complex while preserving its historic architectural details.
Construction began in 1895 and the school opened in 1896, designed by architects Warren P. Skillings and James M. Corner in Romanesque style. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and converted into 49 residential units in 1984.
The school was renamed in 1908 to distinguish it from a nearby high school with a similar name. The historic nameplate remains visible above the entrance on Galer Street, marking the building's role as a center for the neighborhood.
The building is located at 515 West Galer Street and is easily accessible from nearby parks, shops, and community sites. Visitors can view the exterior architecture and see how a historic school building was successfully converted into modern residential space.
The 1984 conversion into 49 residential units was one of the largest private building renovations of its kind in the Northwest and became a model for adaptive reuse of historic schools. The new entrance on Galer Street features a fountain and underground parking garage while preserving the historic facade.
