Skybridge, Cable-stayed railway bridge in Metro Vancouver, Canada
Skybridge is a cable-stayed concrete structure spanning 616 meters across the Fraser River between New Westminster and Surrey. It carries two parallel tracks for SkyTrain service on the Expo Line, forming a critical link in the regional transit network.
Construction started in 1987 as a joint effort between Hyundai Engineering and Kerkhoff Construction to connect the two cities. The project was completed in phases, with the Surrey section opening before the final New Westminster connection.
The bridge stands as a representation of transportation infrastructure advancement in British Columbia, marking a shift toward efficient public transit systems.
Crossing happens via regular SkyTrain service on the Expo Line connecting King George and Waterfront stations. Check departure times from either end station to plan your journey accordingly.
The structure uses 104 pre-fabricated concrete sections transported by barge and joined with epoxy resin. This assembly method allowed faster construction compared to traditional on-site building techniques.
