Carpinteria Tar Pits, Natural asphalt lakes at Carpinteria State Beach, California.

Carpinteria Tar Pits are natural asphalt seeps along the California coast where black tar continuously oozes from underground geological faults. The tar pools solidify into hard asphalt when exposed to air and ocean water.

Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portola discovered these formations in 1769 and named the area Carpinteria after observing Native Americans building boats there. The site has remained a mark of early European and indigenous contact on this coast.

The Chumash people used asphalt from these natural seeps to waterproof their wooden boats and craft tools that they relied on every day. This practice shaped their relationship with this coastal area for centuries.

The tar pits sit at the southeastern end of Carpinteria State Beach and are easily reached from a small parking area there. Visit during low tide when more formations are exposed, and wear sturdy shoes since the surface is oily and slippery.

This location is one of only five known places in the world where this geological phenomenon occurs and preserves fossils from the Pleistocene epoch. The combination of active asphalt seepage and preserved ancient remains makes it geologically remarkable.
