Hesperia, Desert city in San Bernardino County, United States

Hesperia sits in the Victor Valley and spreads across the Mojave Desert landscape at an elevation of 3,186 feet (971 meters) above sea level. The settlement developed along the Mojave River and is now a desert city with open spaces between residential areas and gently rolling terrain.

A railroad company founded the town site in 1891 to attract settlers and support transport through the desert. The community grew slowly until its official incorporation as a city in 1988, when the population expanded rapidly.

The Desert Serrano communities lived along the Mojave River for centuries, gathering for seasonal acorn festivals that brought neighboring villages together. These traditional celebrations followed the natural cycles and strengthened connections among the groups who shared the river corridor.

Hesperia Lake Park offers fishing areas, camping zones, and spaces for family gatherings that remain accessible throughout the year. Most facilities suit visitors with different mobility needs and sit on flat terrain near the park entrance.

The temperature swings sharply between day and night, and despite the desert setting, about 4.4 inches (11 centimeters) of snow falls each year. These winter snowfalls surprise many visitors who expect a purely hot desert climate.
