Horsethief Canyon, Canyon in San Bernardino County, California.
Horsethief Canyon is a canyon in San Bernardino County that forms the upper section of Summit Valley. It descends from about 3,800 feet (1,200 m) near Cajon Pass to 3,123 feet (950 m) at its mouth.
The canyon served as a natural passage through the mountains, connecting different parts of the region. People traveled through these mountain routes and valleys for centuries to move across the landscape.
The name comes from the days when horse thieves used remote canyons to hide stolen animals. This piece of frontier history remains reflected in the landscape today.
The canyon is accessible via California State Routes 138 and 173, which both pass through it. Visitors can approach from several directions throughout the county.
The canyon holds several natural pools bounded by granite boulders along Pine Valley Creek. Sycamore and cottonwood trees shade the creek banks and create leafy alcoves throughout the canyon.
