Grandview Lookout Tower and Cabin, fire lookout in Kaibab National Forest near the South Rim of the Grand Canyon
Grandview Lookout Tower and Cabin is a fire lookout station in Coconino County's forest near the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The steel tower built in 1936 stands about 81 feet (25 meters) tall with a small observation cabin at the top, and a residential cabin nearby housed the station's staff.
The site was selected in 1909 as one of the earliest monitoring locations near the Grand Canyon when the original national monument was established. The present tower was constructed in 1936 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
The site sits at about 7,500 feet (2,300 meters) elevation and is accessible by car via Coconino Rim Road, then a short walk to the towers. Weather changes quickly here with cooler temperatures, so bring warm layers, sturdy shoes, and plenty of water as no facilities are available on-site.
The observation cabin atop the tower is surprisingly small at roughly 7 feet (2 meters) by 7 feet, revealing how cramped working conditions were for fire watchers. Today volunteers conduct restoration projects where visitors can learn historic preservation skills while helping maintain the structures.
