Big E Steakhouse & Saloon is a Western-style steakhouse in Tusayan, a small town just outside the south entrance to Grand Canyon National Park. Inside, wooden tables sit beneath rustic chandeliers, and the walls are designed to look like storefronts from the old American frontier.
The restaurant was opened in 1963 by Elling Halvorson, who had come to the area to build a water pipeline from the Inner Gorge to the South Rim. Once the construction work was done, he chose to stay and turned the place into a lasting dining business.
The walls and ceilings are covered with hunting trophies and old objects from the American West, giving the room a look straight out of a Western film set. Guests eat surrounded by these details, which are a common feature of roadside steakhouses across the American Southwest.
The restaurant sits in the center of Tusayan, a short walk or drive from the Grand Canyon south entrance, making it easy to find. Lines can get long in the evening during busy travel seasons, so arriving early for dinner is a good idea.
Two life-size statues of cowboys on horseback stand at the entrance, greeting visitors before they even step inside. Some specialty drinks are served in glasses shaped like cowboy boots, which guests are often allowed to take home.
