Genoa, place in Douglas County, Nevada, United States
Genoa is an unincorporated community in Douglas County, Nevada, sitting in the Carson Valley at the base of the Sierra Nevada. It is a small settlement made up of a handful of historic buildings along a simple main road, surrounded by open ranchland and mountain views.
Genoa was established in the 1850s as Nevada's first permanent non-Native settlement, starting out as a trading post on the route between California and the interior. It grew quickly into a supply stop for travelers before larger towns took over that role.
Genoa takes its name from the Italian port city, chosen by early settlers who came through Utah Territory. The wooden storefronts and simple layout along the main road still show how a small western trading community organized itself.
Genoa is easily reached by car from Carson City or Reno and works well as a short day trip. The settlement is small enough to explore entirely on foot, with most points of interest along the main road.
Genoa is home to what is considered Nevada's oldest bar, a tavern that has been operating since the 19th century. The building still stands in its original location and remains open to visitors today.
