Lion House, Historic residence in Temple Square, Salt Lake City, United States
Lion House is a three-story structure with distinctive gables and a carved stone lion sculpture positioned above the main entrance. The interior contains multiple rooms arranged along corridors, and today visitors can access a restaurant and event spaces throughout the building.
The building was constructed in 1856 to house a prominent religious leader and his large household from multiple marriages. Its design reflects the specific needs of such a substantial domestic arrangement in the mid-1800s.
The building hosted important community gatherings and religious meetings throughout its early years. Visitors can observe how the rooms were arranged and understand the role this house played in local religious life.
The main entrance faces South Temple Street and is straightforward to locate. The restaurant on the ground floor provides a place to eat and rest, while the upper levels are available for special occasions and private events.
The building has an unusual layout with more than 26 bedrooms strategically arranged along hallways. This configuration allowed the household members to maintain both private and shared spaces in a practical way.
