The Salt Lake Tabernacle organ is a large pipe instrument featuring more than 11,600 pipes ranging from small components to very long shafts. The instrument has approximately 150 stops that produce a wide variety of tonal colors.
Joseph Ridges built the original instrument between 1863 and 1867 using local materials. The original voice was later expanded while retaining some original components.
The organ accompanies the resident choir during weekly broadcasts heard across North America. It remains central to the musical life of this congregation.
Organists perform concerts daily that visitors can hear for free. The building sits in the heart of downtown and is easy to reach on foot.
Some pipes from the original 1867 construction still function today. These old components are mixed with modern parts, creating a connection between past and present.
