"You are Here" Art Installation, Public art tower in Salt Lake City, United States
You Are Here is a vertical tower artwork in downtown Salt Lake City made from more than 150 standard road signs stacked together. The signs are arranged to create a tall, narrow structure that prompts questions about how people navigate and understand their surroundings.
The artwork was completed in 2016 by artist Aaron T. Stephan as an important addition to the city's public art landscape. Its creation marked a moment when Salt Lake City was expanding its collection of contemporary works displayed in public spaces.
The installation brings together everyday road signs in an artistic arrangement that encourages visitors to think about their place in the city. People sit on the red bench and view the structure from different angles, discovering new meanings in familiar objects.
The artwork is located in a central area easily accessible by public transportation, and a red bench provides a place to rest and observe. The best views are found by walking around the structure from different positions, especially when light hits the reflective surfaces.
The 150 road signs retain their original reflective properties, causing the installation's appearance to change dramatically between day and night. After dark, the signs glow under light, transforming ordinary highway markers into something that catches the eye in an unexpected way.
