Pont-passerelle du Mont Saint-Michel, Pedestrian bridge in Le Mont-Saint-Michel, France
The Pont-passerelle du Mont Saint-Michel is a pedestrian and vehicle bridge spanning 760 meters to connect the mainland with the island. It features a central roadway of 6.5 meters and a 4.5-meter wooden walkway alongside for foot traffic.
Completed in 2014, the bridge replaced a 19th-century causeway that blocked natural water flow and caused sand to pile up around the island. This change allowed the sea to flow around the island again and restore it to a more natural state.
The structure maintains sightlines across the bay by using minimal vertical supports in its design. Visitors walking across feel more connected to the water and landscape than they would on a traditional bridge.
The bridge rises 1.5 meters above the highest water level and allows passage for shuttle buses, horse-drawn carriages, and supply vehicles. Pedestrians can walk on the wooden walkway while vehicles use the central roadway.
The bridge rests on 134 steel posts arranged in pairs every 12 meters and anchored in concrete foundations reaching depths of 17 to 35 meters. This design allows the structure to move slightly with tidal shifts and natural water movements.
